Overview

Does it ever feel like you must “hide” yourself in order to be practicing ethically?  In this workshop, we will explore the crucial ways you can understand how to truly “be yourself” and still show up online and in person for your clients in a way that is ethically sound and that keeps you and your clients safe. 

Learning Objectives

  • Recognize and name the difference between boundary crossings and boundary violations  
  • Compare and contrast 3 methods of therapeutically and ethically addressing boundary issues 
  • Integrate relevant ethical principles and professional ethics codes into managing boundary issues with clients 
  • Develop plan in order to better recognize and minimize porous boundaries in practice. 
  • Describe four main types of therapist self-disclosure. 
  • Explain three reasons why boundary issues are an integral part of therapist self-disclosure via social media. 
  • Explain how and why therapist self-disclosure can deepen the therapeutic relationship. 
  • Identify three crucial countertransference pitfalls that may rupture the therapeutic relationship. 
  • Explain why and how telehealth methodology often requires greater attention to ethical  issues such as confidentiality and boundaries. 
  • Describe and integrate plan for ongoing self-care plan which will support ethical best practice.

Meet the Speaker

Kirsten Lind Seal, PhD, LMFT, is adjunct Associate Professor of MFT Ethics at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota, and Ethics faculty in the MFT doctoral program at Chaminade University in Honolulu, Hawaii. Her research has been published in Psychology Today and in JMFT.  Dr. Lind Seal has been interviewed as a content expert on MPR, WCCO, CNN.com, Politico.com and in the Star Tribune.  She presents locally, regionally and nationally on ethical issues, maintains a completely virtual private practice and is a co-creator and long-time regular contributor to Relationship Reboot, a segment on relationships on WCCO (CBS) TV’s Midmorning show in the Twin Cities.   


Continuing Education Credits

6.5 contact hours will be earned by the following licensing boards:
