Health care staff and patients are at risk of infection in the workplace. It is estimated that 5.6 million healthcare workers are at risk of occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens. It is essential that staff is knowledgeable of standard precautions. When performing patient care, standard precautions are the minimum practices of prevention that must be performed for all patients, regardless of confirmed or suspected health status. The purpose of universal precautions is to prevent and minimize the transmission and spread of infections.
