One World, Two Footballs: How sport explains America’s historical ambivalence towards global engagement
Andres Martinez
To be #1 or the only one has been a defining identity conundrum for the United States and its global engagement throughout the nation’s history. And nowhere has that conundrum been more evident than in its approach to sports. In the late 19th Century, Americans invented their own games to detach themselves from the world and reinforce a sense of national identity and insularity, literally opting not to play with the rest of the world. Fast forward to the 21st century, however, and we are seeing a remarkable global sporting convergence that dramatically increases Americans’ everyday engagement with the rest of the world at a time when other forces seek to pull nations apart. Americans just co-hosted a wildly successful FIFA World Cup and are connected like never before to the world’s default sport, to the point where Americans now own a majority of English Premier clubs. At the same time, America’s homegrown sports first developed to reinforce the nation’s exceptionalism - American football, baseball, and basketball - are growing sizable international audiences. Sport is now the most important form of media and the world’s leading pastime, wielding enormous “soft power” in international affairs. What does the fact that America is now playing with the rest of the world like never before mean for transatlantic ties and understanding?
Join Andres Martinez, the author of "The Great Game: A Tale of Two Footballs and America’s Quest to Conquer Global Sport" and co-director of Arizona State University’s Great Game Lab, to explore further what the golden age of sport globalization means for us all.
