John Singleton's 1997 historical drama ROSEWOOD recounts the events of January 1923 in which a mob of white people murdered residents and destroyed the buildings of Rosewood, a predominantly Black town in rural Levy County in Florida. World War I veteran Mann (Ving Rhames) arrives in Rosewood just as a roaming lynch mob gets wind of false allegations that a Black man has assaulted a white woman. At first seeking to avoid conflict and leave town, Mann comes to realize a full-on massacre is coming, and returns to help protect the local family he's befriended, including matriarch Sarah Carrier (Esther Rolle), son Sylvester (Don Cheadle) and cousin Scrappie (Elise Neal), with whom Mann has fallen in love. "Never in the history of American film had Southern racist hysteria been shown so clearly. Color, class and sex were woven together on a level that Faulkner would have appreciated." – Stanley Crouch, The New York Times. The film features an original score by John Williams; the fine cast includes Jon Voight, Bruce McGill, Robert Patrick, Michael Rooker and Mark Boone Junior.
