About this Event
Adding flash outdoors can feel intimidating—but it doesn’t have to be.
In One Light, Big Impact, photographer and educator JC Carey introduces photographers to the fundamentals of off-camera lighting in a fun, approachable, and hands-on workshop designed specifically for beginners.
Using just one light, participants will learn how to create portraits that look polished, cinematic, and intentional—without getting overwhelmed by complicated gear or technical jargon. Instead of memorizing lighting diagrams, this class focuses on understanding why light works so photographers can confidently adapt to changing locations, weather, and creative ideas.
Through real-world outdoor shooting scenarios, students will explore how to balance ambient light with flash, shape light naturally, and create images ranging from subtle and clean to bold and dramatic.
What You’ll Learn
- How ambient light and flash work together
- The role aperture and shutter speed play in outdoor lighting
- Simple, repeatable techniques for placing and shaping light
- How modifiers affect the quality and direction of light
- Using High Speed Sync (HSS) for bright daylight portraits
- Working with natural light instead of against it
- Building confidence using one light in unpredictable environments
This Location Lighting Lab is highly interactive, giving participants the opportunity to work directly with lighting equipment, experiment with modifiers, and practice creating images on location. The focus is on hands-on learning, creativity, and developing a practical process you can use anywhere.
This class is beginner-friendly, but participants should have a basic understanding of camera settings including ISO, aperture, and shutter speed so the workshop can focus on lighting and creative application.
Whether you want to create more dramatic portraits, improve consistency outdoors, or finally feel comfortable using off-camera flash, this workshop is designed to make outdoor lighting approachable, understandable, and creatively exciting.
Please Note: This is a don't-miss in-person event only.
JC Carey
JC Carey is a photographer, educator, dad and lighting evangelist who has made it his mission to demystify flash and make it accessible to photographers at every level. Known for his ability to translate complex lighting concepts into simple, repeatable processes, JC focuses less on “magic settings” and more on understanding how light actually works—because once you understand it, you can bend it to your will.
With years of real-world shooting experience across portraits, action, and environmental work, JC has built a reputation for creating dynamic, polished images in less-than-ideal conditions. Wind, harsh sun, tight spaces—those aren’t problems, they’re just variables.
Since 2020, JC has been a proud member of the Westcott Lighting Team, working closely with one of the industry’s leading lighting brands to educate photographers and help them integrate lighting into their everyday workflow.
His teaching style blends practical knowledge with a relaxed, no-pressure approach that helps even the most light-averse photographers feel at ease. He firmly believes that great lighting isn’t about memorizing recipes—it’s about developing a repeatable process that works anywhere, with any gear.
Whether you’re picking up a flash for the first time or trying to move beyond inconsistent results, JC’s goal is simple: give you the confidence and understanding to create intentionally, not accidentally.
