🇬🇧 One Empire, Many Nations – Forms of a Shared Imperial Identity Among the Nations of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy
Did a shared imperial identity exist in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy? How did national, cultural, and political identities coexist and interact within this multinational state? What role did common institutions, historical traditions, and dynastic loyalty play in shaping a sense of belonging among the peoples of the Habsburg Empire?
Organised within the framework of the Erasmus+ funded UNIDICE (Unity, Diversity and Identity in Central Europe) project and the NKFIH OTKA SNN 146934 research project, this international workshop brings together distinguished historians from Slovakia, Czechia, and Slovenia to explore the complex relationship between imperial identity, national consciousness, and political loyalty in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy.
The event will examine how communities with different languages, cultures, and historical traditions related to the shared political framework of the Habsburg Empire. Particular attention will be given to the interaction between imperial institutions and national movements, the coexistence of multiple identities, and the role of the Monarchy in shaping the political and cultural landscape of modern Central Europe.
By bringing together scholars representing different national historiographical traditions, the workshop aims to encourage comparative perspectives and foster a deeper understanding of the possibilities and limitations of a shared imperial identity.
The event consists of two complementary sessions: a morning academic workshop featuring presentations by invited historians, followed by an afternoon roundtable discussion exploring the historical legacy of the Monarchy and its diverse national interpretations.
📅 Date: Monday, 9 November 2026, 9:00–14:30
📍 Venue: Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), Faculty of Humanities, Faculty Council Chamber, Budapest, Hungary
🌐 Working language: English

The afternoon roundtable will bring together the invited historians to discuss whether a shared imperial identity can meaningfully be identified in the history of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy.
The discussion will explore the coexistence of national and imperial loyalties, the different national memories of the Habsburg Empire, and the ways in which shared political and cultural traditions continued to shape Central Europe after the dissolution of the Monarchy.
Particular attention will be devoted to the relationship between national historiographical perspectives and the possibilities of developing a shared Central European understanding of the region's imperial past.
Main organiser: Dr. Andor Mészáros (Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest)

ABOUT THE ORGANISING RESEARCH PROJECTS
Unity, Diversity and Identity in Central Europe (UNIDICE) is an international project funded by the European Union's Erasmus+ programme, dedicated to exploring the history, identities, and historical memory of Central Europe through comparative research.
Coordinated by Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), in partnership with Masaryk University in Brno and the University of Wrocław, the project brings together researchers and higher education institutions from Hungary, Czechia, and Poland. Through international and national workshops, academic conferences, and collaborative research and educational activities, UNIDICE aims to develop new perspectives on Central Europe's historical development, cultural diversity, and interconnectedness.
The event is also connected to the NKFIH OTKA SNN 146934 research project, entitled “Hungarica in the Collection of the Regional Archives of Maribor, the Branches of the Historical Archives of Ljubljana, and the Manuscript Collection of the National and University Library of Slovenia.” The project focuses on identifying and studying historical sources relating to Hungary preserved in Slovenian archival and library collections.

🌐 A rendezvény nyelve: angol
PROGRAM
🔹 9:00–11:30 | Nemzetközi tudományos workshop
A délelőtt folyamán a meghívott történészek tudományos előadások keretében mutatják be a Monarchia nemzeteinek történetével, a politikai lojalitás és a nemzeti önazonosság kérdéseivel, valamint a közös birodalmi identitás különböző megnyilvánulásaival kapcsolatos kutatásaikat. Az előadásokat szakmai vita követi, lehetőséget teremtve a közép-európai történeti tapasztalatok összehasonlítására és a nemzetközi tudományos párbeszédre.
Meghívott előadóink:
Prof. Dr. Roman Holec, DrSc. – a pozsonyi Comenius Egyetem Bölcsészettudományi Karának és a Szlovák Tudományos Akadémia Történettudományi Intézetének kutatója (Szlovákia).
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Andrej Tóth – a Prágai Közgazdaságtudományi Egyetem és a České Budějovice-i Dél-csehországi Egyetem oktatója (Csehország).
Dr. Gregor Antoličič – a Szlovén Tudományos és Művészeti Akadémia Kutatóközpontja (ZRC SAZU) Milko Kos Történettudományi Intézetének kutatója (Szlovénia).
Prof. Dr. Andrej Rahten – a Maribori Egyetem Bölcsészettudományi Karának professzora, a ZRC SAZU Milko Kos Történettudományi Intézetének kutatója (Szlovénia).
🔹 11:30–13:00 | Ebédszünet
🔹 13:00–14:30 | Nemzetközi kerekasztal-beszélgetés
A délutáni kerekasztal-beszélgetésen a meghívott történészek közösen keresik a választ arra, hogy beszélhetünk-e közös birodalmi identitásról az Osztrák–Magyar Monarchia esetében. A beszélgetés során szó esik a nemzeti és birodalmi kötődések együttéléséről, a Habsburg Monarchia eltérő nemzeti emlékezeteiről, valamint arról, hogy a Monarchia felbomlása után milyen formában éltek tovább a közös politikai és kulturális hagyományok.
A beszélgetés különös hangsúlyt helyez a közép-európai történeti nézőpontokra és a nemzeti történetírások közötti párbeszéd lehetőségeire.
Főszervező: Dr. Mészáros Andor (ELTE)
Szeretettel várunk mindenkit, aki érdeklődik az Osztrák–Magyar Monarchia története, Közép-Európa nemzeti és kulturális sokszínűsége, valamint a közös történelmi örökség kérdései iránt!
A SZERVEZŐ KUTATÁSI PROJEKTEKRŐL
Az UNIDICE (Unity, Diversity and Identity in Central Europe) az Európai Unió Erasmus+ programja által támogatott nemzetközi együttműködés, amely Közép-Európa történetének, identitásainak és történelmi emlékezetének összehasonlító vizsgálatát tűzte ki célul. Az Eötvös Loránd Tudományegyetem koordinálásával, a brnói Masaryk Egyetem és a Wrocławi Egyetem partnerségében megvalósuló projekt nemzetközi és nemzeti workshopok, konferenciák, valamint közös kutatási és oktatási tevékenységek révén járul hozzá a régió történelmi sokszínűségének jobb megértéséhez.
A rendezvény megvalósulásához kapcsolódik továbbá az NKFIH OTKA SNN 146934 azonosító számú, „Hungarikumok a Maribori Regionális Levéltár gyűjteményében, a Ljubljanai Történeti Levéltár fiókjaiban és a szlovén Nemzeti és Egyetemi Könyvtár Kézirattárában” című kutatási projekt, amely a szlovéniai közgyűjtemények magyar vonatkozású történeti forrásainak feltárására és tudományos vizsgálatára irányul.
