The Yankton Community Library will host a discussion of the 2024 One Book South Dakota selection Little and Often by Trent Preszler on Thursday, May 16 at 6:30 pm. Dr. Jamie Sullivan, a South Dakota Humanities Council Scholar, will lead the discussion.
The memoir focuses on a single year during which Preszler, a South Dakota native living on Long Island, mourns the death of his estranged father by using inherited tools to build a wooden canoe. In the process, he comes to better understand his father – a cattle rancher, rodeo champion, and Vietnam War Bronze Star Medal recipient – and himself.
Preszler grew up on a ranch between Faith and Lemmon, SD but has spent much of his adult life in and around New York City. The contrast between those settings, as well as his level of comfort in each one, is at the heart of the book.
Limited copies of the book are available for checkout at the library and through the Libby app. This event is made possible by a grant from the South Dakota Humanities Council.
Be sure to come back to meet the author, Trent Preszler, on Tuesday, July 2 at 12pm for an author visit and book signing!
