One Body by Heather Jones
About this Event
ONE BODY: A Satirical Eucharist is a one-person theatrical piece written and performed by Heather Jones (they/them) that’s structured like an Anglican Mass, but prayers and hymns are replaced with pop culture references, group improvisation, and original music for voice and electronics. In a typical Eucharist, there is communion, but in ONE BODY it’s not bread and wine. In church you read scripture, but here it isn’t from the bible. You’ll sing your favorite hymns, but the organ is an Omnichord and the choir is a vocoder and a loop station. What appears to be an absurdist variety show subtly incorporates the touchstones of Heather’s evolving spiritual identity: group ritual, communal singing and dance, arts and crafts, gender expansiveness, and examining their deeply codependent relationship with God (he/him)...and probably everyone else they’ve ever met.
Heather immaculately conceived ONE BODY after growing up as a child and grandchild of Southern Baptist church leaders and then singing and working in Episcopal churches for over two decades. At three, Heather insisted on reciting the Lord's Prayer with their parents every night, but they assigned lines so that they got all the “good parts” to themself. ONE BODY is both an homage to and a departure from Heather’s childhood in the American South as a little closeted gay kid who had trouble understanding the rules of the real world, but felt safe onstage when they were playing someone else. Writing a show about church is like Captain Hook writing poetry about alligators, but as it turns out, Heather has come around to a true love for the theatricality of church, the spirituality of theatre, and the wisdom to know that maybe there is no difference.
Heather Jones (they/them) is an embodied performer and creator whose multi-genre works have been commissioned by the GRAMMY nominated Wild Up Ensemble, Spoleto Festival USA, and Amanda+James productions. Their resume spans opera, musical theatre, choral, jazz, and film and TV scores, and they have performed everywhere from Madison Square Garden to Lincoln Center to the NPR Tiny Desk. In the 2026-2027 season, Heather’s queer escapist cabaret adaptation of Peter Pan titled Never Land premieres at the Philadelphia Fringe Festival and their one-person show for singer and electronics titled ONE BODY: A Satirical Eucharist will make its west coast premiere in Los Angeles with the Resonance Collective. This season, Heather also appears with the Atlantic Theatre Company, Santa Fe Desert Chorale, Paradox Opera, and Fourth Wall Ensemble, and their voice can be heard in the credits of the Mystery Science Theater 3000 reboot. Offstage, Heather enjoys cooking, biking, staring at the sky, and traveling the country in their converted camper van, Val.
