A perpetually living project, Once Upon a Time in Seattle returns to Northwest Film Forum in a revised, expanded (and shorter!?) edit for this special encore engagement. Now comprised of moments from 51 films shot in Seattle (up from 47 at the premiere), and a few irresistible facsimiles, Once Upon a Time in Seattle is part love letter, part loony action adventure, and part free-associative meditation on the transience of landscape in a city that has always had a complicated relationship with honoring its past while moving swiftly (recklessly?) into the future.
There is no linear narrative, and dialogue is kept to a minimum. The city itself is both location and protagonist, while the function of the human characters, or perhaps more accurately, ciphers, is that of a vessel to move us through the city and occasionally offer loose context or comic relief. No single shot or sequence is sustained longer than a minute, with most individual shots lasting less than 20 seconds, and over half clocking in at 5 seconds or less. The result is a deceptively complex amalgamation of wholly unrelated material, and an impressively unique editorial/directorial achievement.
Surprisingly weaving numerous throughlines from the many disparate existing narratives, while leaving much open to the viewer’s interpretation, scene chronology floats between seemingly non sequitur, to surprisingly, quietly poignant, depending on the viewer’s own history with the city. A hyper-local, one-of-a-kind film experience and an opportunity to examine Seattle’s ever-changing landscape as seen through the camera lens, Once Upon a Time in Seattle offers a unique portal to examine our city’s topography (and vibe!) of the past, both near and distant.
🎞️ ABOUT THE FILMMAKERS 🎞️
Collide-O-Scope is the creative partnership of Shane Wahlund and Michael Anderson, and the name of the live monthly show they have produced here in Seattle for over 16 years. Curated, edited, and hosted by the duo, both lifelong, obsessive collectors and conservators of pop culture, Collide-O-Scope began in 2010 at Seattle’s legendary (and sorely missed) Re-bar. Since then, they have been delighting and confounding audiences with their singular brand of video entertainment at venues like SIFF Cinema Egyptian for their spectacular Halloween celebrations, Central Cinema, Seattle Center (on a wall of water at the International Fountain!), MoM, and Here-After at The Crocodile).
Their popular monthly shows continue to play to sold-out audiences at Beacon Hill’s Clock-Out Lounge, every second Monday, with keenly curated vintage video, freaky film, and found footage, all masterfully woven into hilarious mind- melting montage. An expertly edited fantasia of sight and sound, packed with absurd pop culture ephemera, obscure oddities, and awesome music, all remixed and mashed into one epic entertainment. Perfect for stoners, drinkers, thinkers, and all seekers of the unusual.
These two don’t just pull from iconic pop culture – they create it. Proficient filmmakers in their own right, Shane and Michael have produced elaborate video content for a variety of other artists, including drag superstars Dina Martina and BenDeLaCreme, and J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr.
