MAIN GALLERY:

Tal Amitai-Lavi and Tal Frank: Homeline

Israel-based artist Tal Amitai-Lavi and Mexico City-based artist Tal Frank’s site-specific installation at Locust Projects, Homeline, is inspired by the architectural structure of the Main Gallery. The project is composed of three domestic elements created out of unexpectedly weightless materials, including light and delicately-installed nylon strings: a window that separates the space, a projected carpet, and a slowly flowing curtain. These objects generate a succinct, close-knit architectural-sculptural setting in black and white. The installation explores reflections, inversions, illusions, and space disruptions and creates an illusionistic, dreamlike environment and confronts viewers with their perception and senses. The installation marks the artists' first collaboration on a large-scale installation and first collaborative exhibition in Miami.

PROJECT ROOM:

Juan Ledesma: The Rhythm of Speech

Rhythm of Speech is a new site-specific experimental audiovisual installation by Miami-based artist and musician Juan Ledesma. Ledesma’s first solo presentation draws connections between diverse musical traditions and our collective lived experiences by exploring the musical potential of spoken accents. Although accents are commonly considered linguistic indicators of nationality, cultural upbringing, or socio-economic background, Ledesma aims to reframe language as a collective repository of sounds that can be used towards creative musical compositions.

MOBILE STUDIO:

LAB MFA Victoria Ravelo: Hidden in Plain View

Victoria Ravelo, MFA candidate at the Tyler School of Art and Architecture, Temple University, is the seventh MFA degree-seeking student featured in Locust Projects’ LAB MFA open call. Ravelo will be in residence for the month of June, during which time she will transform the project space into a working laboratory in which she will create sugar sculptures daily using a hard candy recipe and invite the community to collaborate by donating and embedding materials that have personal significance. The finished installation will be on view July 1-August 7, 2021.
