About this Event
Join Liang-Jung Chen to explore 0urban stone. Participants will use rice papers and inks to create beautiful samples of the surrounding stone to take home, as well as taking part in a hands-on exercise of stone rubbing, which will include sampling of the Portland Limestone, on loan from Albion Stone, that dates back to the Tithonian age of the Late Jurassic period.
Based in London, Liang-Jung Chen is an artist and researcher working across drawing, object, installation and performance. Chen’s practice is informed by material culture in anthropological study which leads her to investigate the usage, consumption, creation, and trade of artefacts as well as the behaviours, norms, and rituals that the artefacts take part in. Currently an associate lecturer at Chelsea College of Arts, Chen also runs two ongoing creative practices; initial initiatives and hardware archive.
Albion Stone is a fourth generation family business that produces the highest quality Portland Stone with minimal environmental impact. The organisation are pioneering new techniques for turning unloved and offcuts of stone into bricks, which have a 75% lower carbon footprint compared to traditional fired clay bricks. This innovative work has the potential to play a crucial role in supporting regional production whilst substantially reducing the carbon footprint of construction.
