Iron Dog Books & Surrey International Writers’ Conference present:

On The Edge: Genre-Defying Fiction

with Lisa Brideau, Frances Peck, and Robin Yeatman

*Free to attend*

“What are your comps?” It’s a question all book writers have to answer when seeking publication. What titles are out there, ideally selling by the cartful, that are comparable to yours? The answer determines everything from the book’s category (is it suspense, literary fiction, romance, mystery, satire?) to its sales pitches, from its back jacket description to its cover. But what happens when you can’t easily answer that question?

The novels by these authors teeter on the edge of categorization. Lisa Brideau’s Adrift: is it suspense or cli-fi, literary fiction or speculative fiction, entertainment or a sustainability fable? Frances Peck’s Uncontrolled Flight is tagged as literary fiction and as a thriller; it can be read as a procedural, mystery, tragedy, or love story. Robin Yeatman’s Bookworm delivers the humour and romance that its cover promises, yet the comedy is edged in black and the story skews to satire, not sweetness.

These three Vancouver authors will discuss and read from their gripping, genre-defying novels and will reveal both the difficulties and the fun they’ve experienced in putting forward edgy stories that cross categories.
