About this Event
EVENT DESCRIPTION
How often do you stop and engage with one of our city’s Public Notice signs? If the answer is “rarely” or “never”, you are not alone. Join us for an art-filled evening where we will discuss how badly designed public notices can hurt our democracy and numb civic engagement. We will also get excited about recent solutions and what’s happening to change this trend. The evening will feature Hot Docs Citizen Minutes short film, Excluded by Design, a post screening discussion hosted by best-selling author, and Unlock Democracy founder Dave Meslin and featuring guest speakers Chimwemwe Alao, and Daniel Fusca. Attendees will also simultaneously enjoy the opening reception of Henry Vanderspek’s ON NOTICE Contact Photography Festival exhibit on the same theme. Henry's photos will be displayed in the adjacent hallway gallery. (More info on Henry's exhibit here)
*Film screening + panel discussion will begin at 7:45 pm .
*Light refreshments will be served.
HOST, DAVE MESLIN
Dave is the Creative Director of Unlock Democracy Canada. A passionate transpartisan political disruptor, Dave has spent the last twenty years as a political biologist, exploring the strange and mysterious worlds of protest movements, party politics and non-profit organizations. His TED talk about apathy has more than 1.9 million views and his 90-second video clip from the 2015 Canadian election coverage using colourful stacks of Lego bricks to explain how our voting system fails us, has over 2.5 million views on Facebook alone. Dave’s best-selling book, Teardown: Rebuilding Democracy from the Ground Up, is a roadmap for change and a cure for cynicism. His thesis is simple: We’re stronger and smarter when we’re all involved. By replacing cynicism with a culture of participation, we can re-imagine our role in the world and the possibilities of the future.
