NL | Duitse filmmaker Harun Farocki begon eind jaren zestig met films maken waarin hij consequent twee hoofdthema's aansnijdt: arbeid en de productie van beelden. In schril contrast met de sterke auteursstem van de essayfilm maakt Farocki gebruik van direct cinema, een vorm van filmmaken waarbij het standpunt van de maker zelden wordt onthuld. Deze samenwerking tussen Ingemo Engström en Harun Farocki onderzoekt wat een verhaal is: een auteur en een auteur ontmoeten elkaar om over hun werk te praten. Centraal staan interdisciplinariteit en de vertelvorm die ze kiezen voor hun volgende onderzoeksprojecten. Hij schetst een verhaal over de samenleving en productie in de tijd vlak voor en tijdens het nationaalsocialisme. Zij doet onderzoek naar de Russische schrijfster Larissa Reissner. Op een zelfreflexieve manier worden de mechanismen van de narratie onderzocht.
EN | German filmmaker Harun Farocki began making films in the late 1960s in which he consistently addresses two main themes: labour and the production of images. In stark contrast to the strong auteur voice of the essay film, Farocki uses direct cinema, a form of filmmaking in which the maker's point of view is rarely revealed. This collaboration between Ingemo Engström and Harun Farocki explores what a story is: an author and an author meet to talk about their work. At the centre are interdisciplinarity and the narrative form they choose for their next research projects. He outlines a story about society and production in the time just before and during National Socialism. She researches the Russian writer Larissa Reissner. In a self-reflexive way, the mechanisms of narration are examined.

NL | Deze film is tegelijkertijd een zelfportret en een eerbetoon aan Jean-Marie Straub & Danièlle Huillet, Farocki's rolmodellen en voormalige docenten aan de Filmacademie. In deze door observatie gedreven film documenteert Farocki de vervulling van zijn wens. De film laat zien hoe Farocki, onder regie van Straub, repeteert voor zijn rol als Delamarche in de film Klassenverhältnisse (1983). Tijdens de twee gerepeteerde scènes (een met Harun als acteur) en een van de twee scènes die vijf maanden later in scène worden gezet, word je niet alleen geconfronteerd met de reïficatie van ideeën, maar ook met de veranderlijkheid van gedrag in de uitdaging van meerdere takes; met het verstrijken van de tijd en de manier waarop dat wordt uitgedrukt in taal en gebaar.
In april en mei vertoont Cavia in samenwerking met het Goethe Instituut (https://www.goethe.de/ins/nl/nl/) drie films van Harun Farocki in het kader van '40 stoelen, 40 films, 40 jaar', het 40-jarig jubileumprogramma van Filmhuis Cavia dat in 2023 en 2024 zal worden gehouden, waarbij beelden uit ons verleden opnieuw worden vertoond en nieuwe beelden naar onze toekomst worden geprojecteerd.
EN | This film is simultaneously a self-portrait and a tribute to Jean-Marie Straub & Danièle Huillet, Farocki's role models and former teachers at the Film Academy. In this observation-driven film, Farocki documents the fulfilment of his wish. The film shows Farocki, under Straub's direction, rehearsing for his role as Delamarche in the film Klassenverhältnisse (1983). During the two rehearsed scenes (one with Harun as actor) and one of the two scenes staged five months later, you are confronted not only with the reification of ideas, but also with the mutability of behaviour in the challenge of multiple takes; with the passage of time and the way it is expressed in language and gesture.
In the month of April and May, Cavia in partnership with the Goethe Instituut (https://www.goethe.de/ins/nl/nl/), will screen three of Harun Farocki’s films as part of our ‘40 chairs, 40 films, 40 years’, Filmhuis Cavia’s 40th-anniversary program held throughout 2023 and 2024, rewiring and re-reeling images from our past, projecting new ones towards our future.
