On 9 April 1963, the Thresher SSN593, sank some 220 mi (354 km) east of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. On 28 May 1968, the Scorpion, SSN589 sank to the Atlantic Sea floor about 460 mi (740 km) southwest of the Azores.From 1977 to 1980 Rick Raymond was the lead Naval Reactors engineer responsible for these two submarines on “Eternal Patrol.” He will discuss what lessons are to be learned from their demise.
