--Cleanup Headquarters--
Tom Hanafan Rivers Edge Park - Council Bluffs, IA
--What we're doing--
Boats will ferry teams of volunteers to locations along the Missouri River for a couple hours to gather trash for later disposal. Volunteers that would rather work on land should let us know that when you register online.
--What you get--
Volunteers will receive a free Big Muddy boat ride, t-shirt, reusable water bottle, and lunch! Lunch will be served to all volunteers as you return to the boat ramp. Allergy-friendly options will be available for folks. Please include dietary requests in your online registration so we make sure to have something for you! Trash pickup materials and a life jacket will be provided, but please feel free to bring your own well-fitted life jackets!
--What to bring--
Dress in layers for changing weather conditions. Wear work-appropriate clothing. Long pants are strongly recommended as weeds and poison ivy can be thick. Sturdy shoes or boots are required; no flip-flops or open-toed shoes are allowed on boats. Bring sunscreen, bug spray, and snacks to tide you over until lunch.
--Event Extras--
When you return to the boat ramp, there will be a handful of activities you can participate in:
- Trash Contest - make sure to bring your best trash find back with you to compete for a prize. Get creative! You and others will put your finds up against each other and the crowd will decide which one is the best. There will be numerous prizes.
- Missouri River Explorer Badge Program - designed for ages 5 to 18. The badge is gained upon the completion of the Activity Card, which includes participation in activities and events that fall under the three tenets of the river. Explore, Learn and Protect. Stop by the booth to earn your badge!
- Clean Rivers Start at Home - a new program geared to give you actionable items to take home with you after a day of stewardship to reduce your plastic use!
