Adapted from the novel by Charles Dickens, Jeremy Brock's splendidly theatrical stage play version of Oliver Twist combines all the richness of Dickens's story - the sinister antics of Fagin, the comic pomposity of Mr Bumble the Beadle, and the horror of Nancy's murder at the hands of Sykes.
> Oliver Twist is set in the 19th century and has the following main characters:
> Oliver Twist: Orphan ( young 10-15 years of age) well spoken as opposed to the other youngsters
> Fagin: middle aged miserly exploiting youngsters, criminal ( accented) Jewish
> Bill Sykes: our and out baddy abusive to women, murderer ( 30s -40s) cockney accent.
> Nancy: Bill Sykes’s girlfriend kind hearted. 20s-early 30s) Cockney
>The Artful Dodger: 15 + years. Cheeky Cockney. One of Fagin’s boys who introduces Oliver to Fagin. Cockney
> Mr Bumble: Beagle of the Borough. Quite a nasty character who has a deliberate way of speaking. Is responsible for Oliver being exiled from the Workhouse. 40+ years London accent.
> Mr Sowerberry: Undertaker Miserable countenance as befits his job 40s-50s. London accent
> Noah Claypole: Young man who works for Sowerberry. Very nasty to Oliver. Cockney 20s
> Mrs Corney: 40+ years. Very manipulative especially where Mr Bumble is concerned. Nasty to Oliver. Mr Bumble’s love interest Cockney.
> Charlie: (female) Noah Claypole’s girlfriend. Cockney.
The list goes on and on and with small parts for cockney urchins, some upmarket ‘posh’ characters as well, namely, the elderly Mr Brownlow who briefly takes Oliver into his care, Lady Stock-Jobber who is a benefactor of the Workhouse and many more.
There are parts for everyone in this production, so why not come along to the Theatre on Sunday 19th June at 1.30pm and have a read.
