OLD VS NEW is a journey through the evolution of South African dance music.
From the raw underground drums of Gqom, to the global rise of Amapiano, and into the futuristic rhythms shaping the sound today — this night traces every era that built the culture.
Each phase of the night represents a different chapter.
Phase I — The Roots (2013–2018)
Gqom & Afro House
The night begins with the underground Durban sound.
Raw percussion, dark energy and heavy drums that laid the foundation for everything that followed.
Phase II — The Dawn (2019–2021)
Classic Amapiano
The era that changed everything.
Soulful piano chords, jazzy melodies and the powerful log drum that defined the early Amapiano movement.
Phase III — The Evolution (2022–2024)
Private School & Commercial Amapiano
The sound becomes deeper and more refined.
Smooth melodies, soulful grooves and the rise of the Private School sound alongside chart-topping vocal anthems.
Phase IV — The Future (2025–Now)
3-Step & Tech Fusion
The next chapter of the culture.
Stripped-back 3-step rhythms, tech influences and experimental sgubhu sounds pushing Amapiano into the future.
BATTLE OF THE DRUMS
To truly bring the Old vs New concept to life, the night will feature a special “Battle of the Drums” moment.
A veteran Gqom DJ and a modern 3-Step producer will go back-to-back, showing how the heavy percussion of the old Durban sound evolved into the hypnotic rhythms shaping Amapiano today.
