About this Event
Join us as we celebrate Florida's 11th Network Forest at Spring Hammock Preserve in Big Tree Park! Big Tree Park is a step back in time and a popular tourist destination. Walk through a natural hydric hammock swamp as you make your way on the boardwalk to the former site of "The Senator": an approximately 3,500 year old National Champion Bald Cypress Tree that was lost to fire in January of 2012.
Spring Hammock Preserve covers about 1500 acres and shelters hydric hammocks, floodplain forests, pine flatwoods, and upland mixed hardwoods. Various hiking and biking trails offer encounters with old-growth oaks, cypress, sweetgums, and magnolias. This preserve protects some of the oldest and most impressive cypress trees still standing in Florida.
Please be sure to wear appropriate footwear and bring layers as the weather might change, as well as plenty of water and snacks.
