Olaf Bisschoff’s new paintings draw inspiration from his childhood fever dreams, where he experienced intense, three-dimensional shapes in his home. These memories influenced his art, leading to paintings featuring complex geometries and ‘Escher nightmares’. The works combine pure form and color with a personal exploration of pressure and emotion.The series incorporates elements from Finnish non-figurative abstraction and the Russian Avant Garde Supremacist movement, highlighting the artist’s role as both creator and imitator. It comments on the idea that all art is a reinterpretation of existing concepts. Familiar artwork titles are repurposed, giving a nostalgic and critical look at originality in art. The paintings align with the mid-century modernist revival, experimenting with well-known images in new contexts, representing the cyclical nature of artistic creation.
