Ola Sandberg (b. 1988) is a Malmö based musician, composer and sound artist focusing on sound as phenomena rather than symbol. Working with improvisation, extended duration, repetition, and precisely tuned tonal clusters as tools for listening and exploring inherent properties of sound. Sandberg also works with architectural spaces as listening devices, musical instruments and compositional elements through an artistic research project called Osynliga Rum (Invisible Room).
This work draws inspiration from Iegor Reznikoff’s studies on palaeolithic painted caves which shows a correlation between resonance and density of paintings — pointing to a sonic sensibility stretching back into prehistory. This relationship to sound is at the core of Osynliga Rum where music is used as a method for exploring acoustical space. Ambisonic recording technology is then used a way to capture and document the audible aspects of these spaces, creating a growing sonic archive.
