Percussionist, producer, songwriter, and performer whose career has spanned nearly six decades. Okyerema was born to Judge Jonas H. Asante and Comfort Asante in Koforidua, the Eastern Regional Capital Ghana, Africa. It was his unique experience, adrenaline-driven drumming performing with Hedzoleh Soundz as percussionist that sparked his career. The group Hedzoleh Soundz was introduced by Fela Anikulap Kuti to world renowned trumpet musician Hugh Masekela. They recorded an LP and traveled abroad to the United States of America in 1974 to promote the LP entitled, “Masekela Introducing Hedzoleh Soundz.” Okyerema has performed in the United States with many world-renowned musicians including: The Crusaders, Rene McLean, Lonie Linston Smith, The World Saxophone Quartet, Hamlet Bluiett, Jacky McLean, Pharaoh Sanders, Paul Simon, Little Feet, Third World, Fleetwood Mac, and James "Plunky" Branch and the Oneness of JuJu. Okyerema Asante has performed three world tours, one with Paul Simon on the Graceland Tour, and twice with Fleetwood Mac on the Tango in The Night and Behind the Mask tours. Okyerema has also worked and traveled with Hugh Masekela and Miriam Makeba performing in major cities all over the globe. He has performed solo at the U.S. National Mall across from the White House in D.C., Carnegie Hall twice, and performed in multiple Caribbean music festivals, South America, Europe, and is requested to perform for Presidents of multiple African countries, and for Ambassadors all over the world introducing his exceptional talent and captivating stage performance.
Okyerema Asante maintains a thriving career performing on stage, in the recording studio producing profound music and beats for music artist.
He performs conducting Rhythmic Yoga classes, youth drummer camps, Drum Circle workshops, university and community college play productions, local festival performances in the DC Metro area, and East Coast. Okyerema Asante is devoted to his mission as founder and Director of the Akyeremade Institute of African Music which is an international organization devoted to the education and worldwide teachings of percussion.
He amazingly constructs raw rhythm with new and creative ideas for our youth, advocating for global issue specific to African societies, and opportunities for diversity and inclusion of artistic expressions to bring unity and peace globally. Okyerema has produced six solo albums: Sabi, Drum Message, Yes We Can, Crabs In A Bucket, Ohene Kese A Ebin, Bringing It Home From Savanna To Africa, and the 7th and yet to be released Digital Slavery. Okyerema Asante is also a One-Man Drum Ensemble who performs quoting lyrical stories and using his voice with 85 instruments at a time captivating and porting his audience into an enchanted, distinctive world of percussion vibrations.
He is the recipient of a 3-G Award in New York, New York. A set of Okyerema Asante’s rare personally hand-crafted drumsticks were exhibited at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio from September 1, 1995 through February 1, 2002 earning esteemed acknowledgement as one of the worlds sought after creative and talented master percussionist.
Okyerema Asante was designated as Music Ambassador of Ghana in 1994 by the Entertainment Critic & Reviewers of Ghana (ECRAG) continuously recognized as a peace maker, activist for Afro Jazz, Pop, Rock, and R & B as he has had great influence on unique acoustic percussion rhythms around the world.
