Every month the Oklahoma Film Society will bring you amazing films from across the cinematic spectrum! This month we’ll be joined by director Laron Chapman to discuss the film. We’ll be raffling off the Criterion Greg Araki Box Set!!!
ABOUT THE FILM: With an unflinching gaze and a haunting tenderness, Gregg Araki’s Mysterious Skin explores the fractured lives of two young men bound by a childhood trauma they cannot fully comprehend. Neil (Joseph Gordon-Levitt, in a revelatory performance) grows into a self-destructive drifter, chasing connection in the arms of strangers, while Brian (Brady Corbet) retreats into alien abduction fantasies as a way to explain away the unexplainable. Adapted from Scott Heim’s acclaimed novel, Araki’s film blends raw naturalism with dreamlike lyricism, creating a devastating portrait of lost innocence and survival.
Anchored by fearless performances and suffused with a luminous score by Harold Budd and Robin Guthrie, Mysterious Skin confronts the darkest corners of memory while searching for moments of grace. At once harrowing and humane, it remains one of the most powerful American independent films of the 2000s, a work of beauty carved out of pain, and a testament to cinema’s ability to face the unspeakable with compassion.
Stick around after the screening for a short discussion about the film with Laron Chapman!
