Kwaito is a style of house music that emerged from the Soweto area of Johannesburg, South Africa in the late 1980’s and was highly popular in the 90’s. The tempo of Kwaito is slower than typical house records, with a tempo of about 110 bpm. Kwaito tracks contain typically deep basslines, samples, and sung / rapped vocals. The name of the style originates from Afrikaans word kwaai that stands for hot. So get yourself prepared for a HOT HOT night.
Performing live we have Sandy B who first released one white label record in 1995 released on vinyl 12” and cassette made him the first in his province KwaZuluNatal to release and pioneer Kwaito music'.
The record titled ’Amajovi Jovi’, is named after style of dance. The record contains massive rave basslines and pounding drums accompanied with Sandy’s raps on top. Despite being an excellent record, containing musical masterpieces such as ’Student Night’ and ’Lafaki (Doggy Style)’, the record was not well known outside of South Africa until re-released on the Canadian Invisible City Editions record label in 2017.
After his 1995 project Sandy B released other projects Afro Pop, Deep House and RnB music mostly as radio singles, however the re-release and newly discovered sound of AmaJovi Jovi by the world led to the another Kwaito influenced experimental record in collaboration with Danish DJ Simone Ahà. Recorded in 2017 the record named Qhum Qhaks. Since then Sandy has been touring constantly around Europe and is now arriving for the first time to Helsinki, Finland.
