Oil painting has long carried a reputation for being mysterious, intimidating, even reserved for the masters—but at its heart, it’s simply paint: buttery, slow-drying, and incredibly versatile. This 8-session atelier is your guided introduction to oils, perfect for curious beginners or those ready to expand their skills.
Led by AVA instructor Kate Hendrickson, you’ll learn the fundamentals of oil painting while building your own creative voice. Explore what tools you actually need, how to mix and layer colors, and how light, form, and texture come together on canvas. Each week builds on the last, moving from underpainting and color theory to layering and finishing, giving you space to experiment and grow with confidence.
You’ll leave with several completed small paintings, a new understanding of the medium, and perhaps a lifelong love for oils.
