Oil in Conversation with Josie Licavoli
About this Event
Workshop Description
Join oil painter Josie Licavoli for a beginner-friendly oil painting class designed to build confidence with foundational techniques while encouraging you to develop your own visual language.
Through hands-on exercises, demonstrations, and discussion, you’ll learn the basics of working with oil paint while experimenting with color, texture, composition, and mark-making. We’ll also explore the past, present, and future of oil painting, tracing a medium with a history spanning more than 1,000 years. Together, we’ll consider how artists have used and reimagined oil painting throughout history, and how we can recontextualize elements of art history to create work that feels personal, contemporary, and uniquely yours.

About the Artist
Josie Licavoli is a Bay Area raised painter. In her work, she reimagines a world where the feminine body and the earth remain in reciprocal relation. Drawing from the California coast, her Filipino ancestry and both Western and Asian art histories, Josie paints the figure as a spiritual, emotional and ecological site of knowledge. Rooted in myth, ecology, and lived experience, her paintings are an inquiry on the nuanced ways we mirror the environments we inhabit.
Josie graduated with a degree in Arts Education and Studio Art from Humboldt State University in 2022, and has dedicated herself in making the arts more accessible to a varying range of communities within San Francisco. She currently is a Teaching Artist at SCRAP and a Studio Assistant at Hospitality House Community Arts Program.
