Ikebana International New York Chapter Spring program : Ohara Style Ikebana Demonstration by Grandmaster Ingrid Luders
About this Event

Please join us in exploring the essence of spring with Ohara School Of Ikebana Grand Master Ingrid Luders. Her exposure to Ikebana and studies in Japan, including the Japanese language, has given her a broad view of how Ikebana has been evolving over the years. Her love for nature and Japanese arts is integral to her life, and her exposure to nature in different parts of the world has only deepened her appreciation. Ingrid is deeply devoted to the Ohara School, which emphasizes the observation of nature and art. In this demonstration, she intends to offer attendees a visual and spiritual experience by showcasing a broad range of Ohara School styles, from traditional to contemporary designs. Ultimately, the aim is to renew viewers' appreciation for Ikebana and the importance of preserving nature's beauty. She will make 6-7 arrangement in 90 minutes.

Ingrid Luders was granted the Ohara School Of Ikebana Grand Master Degree, an award by Headmistress Ms. Wakako Ohara for promoting the Ohara school and recognizing artistic talent in 2001. Also, she recived the Meiyo Ichijiken Award of Honor in 2015. With 45 years of teaching experience, Ingrid has conducted demonstrations and workshops in more than 13 states in the U.S. and also in Chile, Argentina, Japan, and Canada. Her demonstrations are held at many organizations, such as the Detroit Art Institute, The Allen Memorial Museum, and the Cleveland Museum of Art. She is the founder and first president of North America Ohara Teachers Association.

Ohara School emphasizes seasonal qualities, natural growth processes, and the beauty of natural environments. Ohara School believes that it is important for its students to observe nature.

Unshin Ohara founded Ohara School in the late nineteenth century, when Japan opened itself to the influence of Western culture. His departure from previous ikebana lay in the creation of a new form which he called the moribana style. This style later evolved into the school’s “landscape arrangement”. He also designed and produced the wide, shallow containers most suitable for works in the moribana style. Additionally, the art of Chinese scholars and the folding screens of the Edo period inspired eloquent and picturesque arrangements —what Ohara is known for. Now, current Headmaster Hiroki Ohara has again broken barriers with his playful crossed-stems style.

The ticket price includs Obento (Japanese lunch box), doors open at 11:30 AM. PLEASE ARRIVE IN TIME TO HAVE YOUR LUNCH BEFORE THE DEMONSTRATION STARTS AT 12:15 PROMPTLY.
