Visit Portland Japanese Garden to see a special two-day ikebana exhibition featuring arrangements created by visiting Master Professor Hirokazu Yokohigashi in the Pavilion. The solo exhibition will showcase his exquisite artistry in arrangements made for participants attending the North American Ohara Teacher’s Association’s annual conference in Portland.
Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging, has been translated as “living flowers” or “giving life to flowers,” and is unique from other approaches to flower arrangement.
About Master Professor Hirokazu Yokohigashi
Professor Hirokazu Yokohigashi began his studies of ikebana in 1967. He has a background in design and has won multiple awards and prizes at various ikebana contests and exhibitions in Japan. Yokohigashi was appointed to the Ohara School’s Council of Professors in 1996. He has traveled extensively worldwide to give demonstrations, workshops, and participate in exhibitions in Canada, Hong Kong, South Korea, South Africa and many states in the U.S. He is excited to come to Portland to teach and show his work.
About the Ohara School of Ikebana
The Ohara School of Ikebana emphasizes connecting with nature season by season, utilizing the materials individual character, and arranging it in a naturalistic way. They are known for moribana, which broke with the more traditional and formal vertical styles, creating new horizontal “landscape” arrangements, with flowers “heaped” (moru) in lower plate-like containers.
About the North American Ohara Teacher’s Association (NAOTA)
The North American Ohara Teachers Association (NAOTA) was founded in January 2002 in order to promote the Ohara School of Ikebana. They share ideas, techniques, and related information on ikebana and Japanese art. The 22nd NAOTA conference is hosted by the Ohara School of Ikebana Oregon Chapter.
