OFFICIAL LAUNCH and COMMUNITY OPEN HOUSE of Ubuntu Athletic Centre

You are cordially invited to join the Official Launch and Community Open House of the Ubuntu Athletic Centre at Empowerment Squared's new location in the east end of Hamilton on Saturday, February 11, 2023 at 10:30 am.

The newly renovated 5,000 sq ft Centre is located at 26 Arrowsmith Road in Hamilton and will offer a variety of sports and recreation programming, as well as serve as a hub for arts programs, community gatherings, and events.

During the event, the ELITE (Empowered Leaders in Training at Empowerment Squared) youth will share their vision for the Centre and the impact of a community space designed to increase access to free, safe, and inclusive sports and recreation programming. In addition, speeches will be given by government officials, as well as partners and sponsors who have helped make the Centre a reality. This will be a great opportunity to learn more about the Centre, meet the team behind it, and hear about the exciting plans for the future. We look forward to welcoming you to the launch and hope you can join us for this historical milestone and accomplishment for our community.

About the Ubuntu Athletic Centre

The Centre is inspired by the concept of ubuntu, a Nguni Bantu (Zulu) term meaning ‘humanity’. Nelson Mandela described ubuntu as “the profound sense that we are human only through the humanity of others; that if we are to accomplish anything in this world it will in equal measure be due to the work and achievement of others.” At Empowerment Squared, we focus on building a supportive, inclusive and collaborative community. We see the Ubuntu Athletic Centre as one of our town squares, our spaces, where people come together and holistically connect the themes of sports and recreation with education and learning.

Funding for the renovation of the facility was provided by an Ontario Trillium Foundation Capital Grant and support from the Amabel Foundation. Architectural services were provided by DPAI Architecture Inc., and materials and contracting services were provided by Train Evolve Recover, Westpoint, Forum Athletics, Juan of Kind, and other providers.

Programming activities at the Ubuntu Athletic Centre will start in April 2023.
