Art acts as a recorder of history. As we view the portraits of early Americans, Western landscapes and early cityscapes, we will explore the history of the Americas as artist captured it on their canvases. Albert Berstadt’s Passing Storm over the Sierra Nevadas documents the western expansion of the United States, while four decades later, Ernest Lawson, in High Bridge, Harlem River, illustrates the urbanization of cities. Through the portrait of Saint Teresa of Avila, we will discover how the Spanish colonist and clerics imported European artists to help decorate the churches and estates of Peru. As we view these paintings and others, guests will be invited to share their knowledge of history as we discuss the art of the Americas.
In order to ensure an optimal experience, Off the Wall tours are limited to 25 participants. Places are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Please check in at the front desk to secure your place on the tour.
