Off the Record, Vol. 1: Blake Mills’ Heigh Ho on Vinyl
About this Event
No playlists, no shuffle, no skipping. Just one great record, played start to finish the way it was meant to be heard.
Off the Record is ListenUp Denver’s new monthly listening night. On the first Friday of each month, we drop the needle on one album and play it in full on a Hi-Fi system you won’t hear anywhere else. Seats are limited to 12, so everyone gets the sweet spot.
Vol. 1: Blake Mills, Heigh Ho (2014)
You may not know Blake Mills by name, but you’ve almost certainly heard his work. He’s one of the most sought-after guitarists and producers working today, behind records from Alabama Shakes, Fiona Apple and Perfume Genius, and he played on Bob Dylan’s Rough and Rowdy Ways.
Heigh Ho is his own record; cut at Ocean Way Recording in Los Angeles, in a room originally built for Frank Sinatra, with friends like Fiona Apple, Jim Keltner, Don Was, Benmont Tench and Jon Brion. It’s a warm, patient, beautifully recorded album, and it rewards close listening on a serious system.
The System
You’ll hear it on a $200,000 reference system: McIntosh amplification and turntable driving Sonus faber loudspeakers. Expect detail, space and texture you’ve never heard from this record before, and probably from any record.
How it works
The needle drops at 6:00 PM sharp, and we play the album in full, Side A to Side B. Afterward, stick around to talk about the record and the gear with our team.
