Why is Odesa so Important to Russia
About this Event

Due to the eponym “Little Odesa” and its numerous appearances in American culture, Odesa may be an even more recognizable Ukrainian city than the nation’s capital. In this conversation, Juliya (Yuliya) Gorodetskaya – a Ukrainian-American journalist, public voice, and entrepreneur with deep personal ties to Odesa – will illuminate the enduring significance of this Black Sea city, not only militarily and economically but also as a bastion of identity and resistance.

Remaining in Odesa at the onset of the full-scale invasion despite having family abroad, Gorodetskaya witnessed firsthand the strategic, cultural, and symbolic pressures that fuel Russia’s ambitions toward the port and the dramatic transformation of the city’s character in wartime. She will share her analysis of why Russia covets Odesa, the challenges of defending it, and what its survival means for Ukraine.

Beyond her political commentary, Gorodetskaya is also the creator of a candle line whose proceeds support Ukraine’s defenders, demonstrating how cultural entrepreneurship can intersect with civic struggle and resilience. At the conclusion of the event, she will present her candle collection.

Hors d'oeuvres and refreshments will be provided.
RSVP is recommended, and donations welcomed.

Juliya (Yuliya) Gorodetskaya is a Ukrainian-American journalist, storyteller, and civic entrepreneur with deep roots in Odesa. Her work spans journalism, social commentary, and creative initiatives that explore the intersections of identity, culture, and resilience.

After years in media and communications in Ukraine – including as head of the press office for “Odessa Classics” – Gorodetskaya relocated to New York, where she continues to engage audiences through her reporting, public speaking, and digital platforms. She is widely recognized for her vivid reflections on Ukrainian society and for using storytelling as a form of advocacy and connection.

In addition to her media work, Gorodetskaya is the creator of a candle line whose proceeds support Ukrainian defenders and restoration efforts. Blending creativity with purpose, she brings together artistic expression and civic solidarity, embodying a generation of Ukrainians transforming hardship into meaningful action.
