Presented by David Robinson, Director, Massachusetts Board of Underwater Archaeological Resources
David's talk presents an account of the tragic 1927 sinking and subsequent recovery of the US Submarine S-4 off of Provincetown and the legacy of the ultimate sacrifice made by its officers and crew that led to multiple safety improvements in the US Navy's submarine service. David's accounting of the S-4's recovery is an especially personal one as he is the great-great nephew of Thomas Eadie, the operation's Lead Diver, who was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor and two Navy Crosses for his heroic actions performed as a US Navy hard-hat diver during the recovery of the S-4, and the US submarine S-51, two years earlier.
David Robinson is the Massachusetts State Underwater Archaeologist, and the Director and Chief Archaeologist of the Massachusetts Board of Underwater Archaeological Resources. Before joining Massachusetts State government in 2019, David was the president of the underwater archaeological consulting firm, David S. Robinson & Associates, Inc., and a marine archaeologist at the University of Rhode Island's Graduate School of Oceanography, where, among many other projects he completed, he mapped Rhode Island's largest ship graveyard and developed methods for identifying submerged paleocultural landscapes working with multiple Indigenous communities and research partners. Over the course of his 32-year career, David has specialized in marine archaeological investigations of submerged shipwrecks, coastal infrastructure, and ancient cultural sites inundated by sea level rise. In 2019, David was the recipient of the Tomaquag Museum’s "Eva Butler Scholar Award" recognizing his two-decades of commitment to Indigenous-led marine archaeological research in Southern New England where he has worked with multiple Tribal communities. He considers this work to be among the most important and meaningful of his career. David holds a masters degree in anthropology from Texas A&M University's Nautical Archaeology Program and a bachelor's degree in anthropology and art from the University of Rhode Island. He has been a certified diver since 1980.
