Jazz Pensacola takes a “Holiday” to the past for its Monday, Oct. 18, Jazz Gumbo at End of the Alley, Seville Quarter, 130 E. Government St. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Music starts at 6:30 p.m. End of the Alley is an outdoor venue.The evening features Turquoise Tango performing the music of Billie Holiday. Performing: Mary Chavez, keys/vocals; Steve Douglas, bass; Lukas Alien, woodwind; Fred Domulot, drums.
Billie Holiday, born April 7, 1915 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was a superstar of her day, according to the official Billie Holiday website. She first rose to prominence in the 1930s with a unique style that reinvented the conventions of modern singing and performance. More than 80 years after making her first recording Billie’s legacy continues to embody what is elegant and cool in contemporary music. Holiday’s complicated life and her genre-defining autobiography “Lady Sings the Blues” made her a cultural icon. The evocative, soulful voice which she boldly put forth as a force for good, turned any song she sang into her own. Today, Billie Holiday is remembered for her musical masterpieces, her songwriting skills, creativity and courageous views on inequality and justice.
Cost of Jazz Gumbo is $10 each for Jazz Pensacola members and guests, $12 for non-members, free for students with ID and military in uniform. Also, join Jazz Pensacola at this event, and admission is free.
Admission includes a cup of seafood gumbo, and you can order from the menu and cash bar. Hold onto your admission tickets for Door Prize drawings. Attendees can also purchase 50/50 tickets for a cash drawing. The winner gets half, and Jazz Pensacola gets half to benefit its music program.
