October First Thursday
October’s First Thursday at MadJax is packed with creativity, design, and fall fun!
Ball State College of Architecture & Planning students will showcase their semester projects and share updates on their work in MadJax, downtown Muncie, and the Creative Corridor.
Visitors can also enjoy Maker Space tours and special features from the MadJax Puppet Club.
We’re also a proud Soup Crawl location - stop by to sample delicious soup as part of this beloved downtown tradition.
Plus, the East Central Neighborhood Association will host free pumpkin carving and games for all ages.
BSU CAP Showcase featuring:
Donna Momoh and Evan Droste:
This semester, our team is exploring how 3D printing, CNC machining (Computer Numerical Control for drilling), and casting different materials can transform traditional building elements, with a focus on modular wall panels. Our concept integrates greenery directly into the panels through built-in planting pockets. By reflecting and responding to the activity inside the building, these panels will develop a dynamic connection between interior use and exterior expression.
We propose dressing the existing facade of The Downtown Farm Stand with these modular panels to add ornamental character, spark curiosity among passersby, and encourage increased pedestrian engagement. Through the integration of digital fabrication with biophilic design, the project aims to enhance the aesthetic and social presence of the building within the Muncie community.
What makes this approach especially exciting is its versatility:
Sustainability Efforts: Clay or eco-friendly composites can be used, reducing environmental impact while supporting urban greenery.
Design Flexibility: Panels can be customized with different patterns. We’ve gathered inspiration from architectural details around the building that we’d love to incorporate into the panel designs
Nolan French, Elliott Godfrey, Alden Lewis, Bryce Wittman, Pierson Xayamath:
Our project explores what a gallery / art exhibition space should be in the modern world. The project studies joinery using modern construction techniques, as well as light and shadow.
Sara Storey, Jesus Ortega, Joe Hendrix, and Dustin Miller:
Working with the city and community partners in downtown Muncie, our goal is to envision the core as a lively and bustling area. Our group is specifically looking at the greater usage within new or existing parks and greenspace, pedestrian safety, quality signage, roadways, and public amenities such as benches and waste disposal. Join us at MadJax, Thursday the 2nd of October to weigh in on how we may facilitate a safe and thriving district for the arts, outdoor activities, festivals, and to provide local businesses with high quality streetscapes to encourage and support local foot traffic and social gatherings.
Mia Gullett, Zoe Harris, and Elyse Hoessle:
We are renovating the Tatiana Bilbao tables that were brought to Muncie through a partnership with Exhibit Columbus and Muncie Arts. We are completely repainting them to be more inviting and fit in with the environment around them at Madjax. We are also making them more usable by adding a wooden top and footrail. One to two will be going out into the courtyard of Madjax as the first step in making it a more welcoming environment. The others will be placed somewhere within Madjax as more seating and workspaces.
Liana Abad, Evan Brown, Adrian Tauriainen, and Maria Musso:
Carnegie Renaissance - Hey Muncie, come on down and see the future of the Carnegie Library! We are proposing a few changes to help liven up the space and bring in more patrons. These changes include new programming, new bookshelves, and more event space. We would love your feedback on these changes and any suggestions you may have about what improvements we will include on this significant architectural masterpiece in the heart of downtown Muncie.
