Thursday, October 3, 2024 at 7 p.m.Dr. Steven Bryant – Milkweeds and Monarchs
Milkweed is critical for the survival of monarchs. Without it they cannot complete their life cycle and suffer population declines. Milkweeds are a diverse group of plants, of which 13 species are native to CA. Are you curious about which species are preferred by monarchs in our area? Do you want to learn how to care for the host plants and the butterflies that use them in your yard? Then join CalBG volunteer and milkweed expert Steve Bryant for an introduction to the amazing world of California native milkweeds and the butterflies who love them.
Steve Bryant grew up in Riverside, starting to raise butterflies (with his dad’s help and encouragement) in 1951, when he was 4 years old. At that time, it was mostly Anise Swallowtails and Gulf Fritillaries. He eventually got a PhD in biology from UCR (working with fruit flies) and was a Professor in Cal Poly Pomona's biology department. He retired from Cal Poly in 2014 and has been a research associate and volunteer at the California Botanic Garden for the past 8 years, specializing in Milkweeds and butterflies. He is currently trying to get all 13 CA native species of Milkweed growing at CalBG.
