In 1896 and 1897, Octave Chanute and his team conducted experiments with gliders in the dunes along the southern shore of Lake Michigan, thus setting the stage for the airplane to come. Local Chanute historian, Simine Short will highlight why Octave Chanute selected this area in Lake and Porter County instead of experimenting with flying machines elsewhere in the country. A hike will follow Short's presentation, allowing a discussion on Chanute's learning to fly.For information, please call the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center at (219) 395-1882 or check the Indiana Dunes National Park Facebook page.
