About this Event
Houston, we have a launch party!
Step into a world where imagination knows no bounds at Octarine Origins: The Accord Awakens, a launch celebration event by Houston's premier production company dedicated to speculative fiction. This unforgettable evening will transport you to realms of wonder and excitement, filled with diverse activities celebrating the best of sci-fi and fantasy.
Check out the agenda below for more information about the night's activities, all of which are completely FREE, thanks to our incredible sponsor and venue, Social Beer Garden! (RSVPing here isn't required but is helpful for our planning purposes)
Not only can you procure delicious craft beer and cocktails from Social's top-notch bartenders, but food will be available via an on-site taco truck and the always-present pizza vending machine (yes, you read that right) on Social's front porch!
If you want to support our work and get an incredibly comfortable tri-blend v-neck t-shirt, be sure to add on your size when you RSVP! All T-shirt orders must be placed by August 23rd. (picture below)
Costume/Cosplay Contest Info
We will have two tiers of competition: Casual and Craftsman
Casual Tier: Open to anyone, no pre-registration required. Come in costume the night of the event and register at the door. Costumes can be any combination of made or purchased. Please review the rules and regulations below. Winners will be selected by the audience!
Craftsman Tier: Open to anyone 18 years of age and older who has made at least 75% of their costume. Registration is required by August 10th and is open to the first 20 registrants. We are charging a $20 registration fee for this tier to help avoid no-shows; if the fee is a financial burden, please contact us at [email protected] and we will work with you. These entries will be judged by two incredible designers and fabricators from right here in Houston along with an audience vote, more details to come soon!
Rules and Regulations - Applies to both tiers
- Contestants are responsible for their own belongings.
- Please be mindful that the event will take place outdoors.
- We do not have a dressing area, so contestants should either come in costume or be prepared to dress at/in their vehicle.
- Craftsman Tier contestants will be asked to provide a written description that the emcee will read during their appearance on stage. This may describe the details of the costume or provide a story about the character portrayed. You may offer details about the construction process, materials, number of work hours, or anything that might impress the judges and fans. This description is limited to 100 words.
- Music will be selected by the event organizers for the walk-ons.
- You may cosplay any fictional characters from speculative fiction (sci-fi, fantasy, horror, magical realism, etc) genres from any medium. Costumes cannot be obscene, offensive, nor endorse any form of hate or hate group. Nudity is not allowed.
- Everything brought onto the stage during a walk-on must be removed at the end of the time limit. Messy substances including confetti, glitter, flower petals, and water are not allowed.
- Pyrotechnics or special effects such as fireworks, flash paper, or smoke machines will not be allowed.
- Contestants may not throw anything off the stage or into the crowd.
Weaponry rules</h4>
All weapons will be subject to inspection before entry and at any point during the event and we reserve the right to inspect and remove any weapon or prop at any time. No functioning weapons are permitted including guns, projectile weapons, knives, blunt objects, etc. This also includes any explosives (including firecrackers, caps, fireworks) and chemical weapons (mace, pepper spray, etc).
NO LIVE STEEL will be permitted on the premises. Live steel is defined as swords, knives, bayonets, cane-swords, and/or other objects made of metal, which can take an edge. This holds true regardless of whether the object is actually sharp. This includes star knives/shurikens.
Replica firearms must be marked with an orange tip and be physically unable to be loaded or fired. Functional guns (including air soft guns, BB guns, cap guns, paintball guns, and pellet guns) and stun guns are NOT PERMITTED. Water guns are permitted as long as they are not loaded. If there is even a small chance that the costume gun could be perceived as a real weapon, it must be marked with an orange tip.
