To examine occupational justice and its role in enabling healthy ageing for older adults in underserved communities.
About this Event

Science tells us that longevity can be improved through healthy eating, physical activity, cognitive stimulation, and social connection. Yet for older people in underserved communities, opportunities to engage in health-promoting activities are often limited by poverty, social isolation, inaccessible environments, and competing priorities such as choosing between heating and food. Activities that lack personal meaning may further reduce motivation and wellbeing.
This lecture critically examines the concept of occupational justice, the right of all people to participate in meaningful daily activities they want, need, and are expected to do to reach their full potential. It explores how occupational injustice contributes to health inequalities and considers the implications for healthy ageing, particularly when working with older adults in underserved communities.

Speaker

Nicola Plastow is an Associate Professor of occupational therapy and clinical academic at Stellenbosch University in South Africa. With over two decades of experience working with underserved communities in the North of England and South Africa, her work focusses on using Afrocentric approaches to promote health, wellbeing , and occupational justice in education and clinical practice.

This event is free and welcomes learners, apprentices, occupational scientists, occupational therapists, and allied health professionals interested in promoting equity, participation, and wellbeing in later life.

Freedom of speech within the law and academic freedom are core principles of our University and underpin our mission to foster intellectual curiosity, rigorous debate, and the pursuit of knowledge. Our staff / students / SU colleagues are entitled to express their ideas and views, providing they do not violate the law. The law rightly prohibits speech that incites violence, terrorism and hate, but does not prohibit speech that others may find upsetting or offensive.

As a University that embodies social justice, we expect people to treat each other with dignity and respect, but it is not our role to censor ways of thinking or stifle debate between those who hold opposing views.

We understand that it can be frustrating to face views and perspectives that do not reflect our inclusive ethos at York St John University.
