OBX History Weekend returns March 30th through April 2nd, 2022! The theme for this year’s free, interactive, public-oriented symposium is Searchers of New Horizons. The weekend celebrates the questors, inventors, dreamers, and pioneers whose paths included the Outer Banks.Use the form on First Colony Foundation's website to claim your spot at obxhistoryweekend.com
Presentations include new information about Roanoke Colonist Thomas Harriot and his remarkable discoveries; English and Native views of the Carolina Algonquians; new discoveries about the fate of the fabled Lost Colony; a new view of Sir Walter Raleigh; and groundbreaking aviators including the Wright Brothers and Sister, General Billy Mitchell, Amelia Earhart, Chuck Yeager, Francis Rogallo, and more.
Other weekend events include:
• Symposium Sessions — 3 days of different presentations and group discussions led by internationally acclaimed historians, archaeologists, and anthropologists. Most symposium sessions will be held at the Gazebo Theatre at Fort Raleigh National Historic Site. The Pioneer Theatre in Manteo’s Town Center will host the Aviation session on General Billy Mitchell.
• Specialized site tours at Fort Raleigh and the Wright Brother's Memorial. No reservation is necessary. Friday afternoon's symposium session will include a field trip to Billy Mitchell Airstrip in Frisco.
• Living History Episode featuring Elizabethan Lady, Nancy Avalon
• One-Man Show — Anas Todkill, Searching for the Lost Colony, starring Willie Balderson. Fort Raleigh, as scheduled. No reservation is necessary.
• Searchers of New Horizons Exhibition — top floor at the Dare County Arts Council with a focus on the paintings of John White, engravings of Theodor DeBry—with text by Thomas Harriot–double points of view—16th-century English & Native Americans; artifacts & displays focused on each of the individuals spotlighted in the symposium. The exhibition opens on Thursday, March 31st, 2022 at 6:00 PM with a wine and cheese reception for symposium attendees and will run for the general public Tuesday-Fridays, 10 AM-5 PM, and Saturday 10 AM-4 PM, from April 1st - 9th, 2022.
• Questors Rendezvous — a Musical production — featuring a combination of music from the time periods of the featured Searchers and light jazz. Musicians include the OBX Queen of Jazz, Laura Martier, Shannah Boone, and the live jazz band, Contented, from Elizabeth City.
Tickets for dinner and entertainment are by prepaying $50 per person or by tables of 10 people for $700 paid for by March 1st. (Drinks are available for those 21+ at the individual’s own expense).
• Aircraft Fly-Over—Saturday, as scheduled, weather permitting.
