Flares in the Dark! The Guilford College Physics Department is pleased to announce a new public open house and presentation event at the Cline Observatory. At 7:30 pm on November 15, Prof. Don Smith will present a multimedia lecture in our planetarium dome on the topic of classical novae: stars that dramatically increase in brightness. Some of these stars even repeat their flares. Don will explain why these events happen, why they might recur, and where they appear on the sky. The currently visible star T CrB might flare at any moment! After the presentation, if weather allows, visitors will be welcomed to the rooftop observatory to experience the sky through our available telescopes.
Guilford is proud and delighted to co-host this event with the Greensboro Astronomy Club (https://greensboroastronomyclub.org/). Founded in 1948, the GAC is dedicated to astronomy education in the Greensboro community. The GAC meets the 3rd Friday of the month, usually at the Greensboro Science Center. The club also hosts observing sessions for the public at area state parks. Check the club website for the most recent club news.
This event is free and children are welcome. No tickets are needed or available. Please note that this is Guilford College and not Guilford Technical Community College.
