Due to the overwhelming response of the last 2 presentations, my friends Mitch Steven and Teresa Diaz, will be giving another visual presentation at REI on August 23rd at 4pm focusing on Oaxaca.
Mexico is considered one of the top five megadiverse countries worldwide, beginning with its biological diversity. Part of the 32 states in the United Mexican States, Oaxaca is the fifth-largest state, located in the southern part of Mexico, where the Southern Sierra Madre and the Eastern Sierra Madre ranges merge into the Isthmus of Tehuantepec— the narrowest part of Mexico. Due to its location, topography, and climate, Oaxaca encompasses one of the top diverse ecosystems, habitats, plants, and animal species in the world. A UNESCO World Heritage Center, Oaxaca is home to the largest population of indigenous peoples--16 different groups with over 36 unique languages spoken-- and ecosystems that range from semi-arid highlands of thorny bushes to tropical forests, mangroves, and coral reefs to cloud forests filled with pine, oak, and endemic fir and fungi in the high mountain ranges.
Teresa Diaz, a native of Mexico and former resident of Oaxaca, cultural researcher, avid naturalist, art historian, and art gallery owner, will be highlighting visually the best parts of this stunning place of exploration and wonder. Whether to experience its nature, its people, its gastronomy, its culture, its archeology, or its history, Oaxaca, a UNESCO-designated World Heritage site treasure, is one of the most intriguing places on Earth.
