Samite weaving under the Sassanians and its long afterlifeRepresentations in late Sasanian and Sogdian art have made it clear that, at least from the time of Khosrow II (reigned 590 to 628) a sophisticated silk weaving industry existed in Iran, producing large-scale designs, most based on animals and birds sacred to Zoroastrianism.
Actual silk textiles in samite weave with closely related designs also survive, not least examples in western European churches. However, until recently it has not been possible to be certain that any of these were made in Iran before the Arab conquest of 632-654. In the last thirty years, many well-preserved textiles have been discovered in tombs in western China, particularly in Dulan county, Qinghai province. Among these there are some superb examples which can be assigned with confidence to Sasanian Iran. But many more, with closely related imagery, were evidently made later, in various geographic locations, some as far east as China, and up to the middle of the 9th century CE at least.
Hero Granger-Taylor has for many years studied early textiles and clothing, dating from Prehistory up to the 12th century CE. With colleagues Ruth Gilbert and Sophie Desrosiers, she currently teaches the Early Textile Study Group’s course on the woven structure of textiles.
