About this Event
About this Workshop:
Join Shawne Cooper for a one-of-a-kind workshop that blends artmaking with flavorful discoveries. We’ll explore the vibrant food scene of Flushing, Queens, stopping at a variety of Chinese eateries that will feed both your appetite and your imagination. Whether you’re a seasoned artist or a curious beginner, Shawne will guide you in capturing the colors, textures, and energy of each delicious dish, quickly and playfully. It’s a chance to savor each bite and document the experience as it unfolds.
Come hungry for good food, creative fun, and community!
By the end of this workshop, you will learn how to:
- Capture the basic shapes of food and drink, using minimal Iines and colors
- Add depth using layered pencil techniques: dry-on-dry, dry-on-wet, and wet-on-dry
- Sketch quickly without starving, or annoying your dining companions
- Build on your pages gradually, one dish at a time
- Add extra "spice" with techniques for steam, sauces, and captions
Note: In addition to the workshop price, participants will buy the food that they choose to eat (& draw); sharing is encouraged. Want to keep it simple? We'll offer an optional tasting menu at the start of the workshop - just bring a little cash and we'll handle the ordering!

About the Instructor:
Shawne Cooper is a NYC-based artist, as well as award-winning copywriter and creative director. She is a longstanding Urban Sketcher, known for her loose and colorful style.
Her work lives at the intersection of art, storytelling, and adventure - and she loves bringing others along for the ride. Shawne has taught at Pratt Institute and has led workshops for NYC Urban Sketchers, the NY Public Library, a tiny hilltop village in Italy, and on the island of Hawaii.
Her work has been exhibited in galleries, at the Philippine Consulate, and even as a flag flying over Rockefeller Center (a Chinese dumpling flag, no less!)
