1907 Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I

Neue Galerie New York and Bank of America are pleased to present a Masterpiece Moment featuring Gustav Klimt’s Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I (1907). Masterpiece Moment is a video series presented by Bank of America that explores great works of art from museums around the world. In this video Neue Galerie director Renée Price offers expert insight on the Klimt portrait which is in equal parts famous for its stunning composition and historically significant provenance.

This painting is revolutionary for both its timeless beauty and a provenance story that represents perseverance and justice. Adele the wife of a wealthy Jewish industrialist Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer is posed in an ambiguous position bedecked in precious jewelry. The diaphanous cloak that surrounds her is studded with her initials "AB." In 1938 the portrait was one of five Klimt paintings seized by the Nazis from the Bloch-Bauer home. For decades the masterpiece was displayed in Vienna where it was renamed "Woman in Gold" to conceal the sitter's identity. Over the course of decades surviving heir Maria Altmann fought for the return of her family's property. In 2005 a panel hearing before the United States Supreme Court determined that the paintings were to be restituted to the heirs. This was a landmark restitution case. In 2006 Ronald S. Lauder acquired Portrait of Adele Bloch- Bauer I for the Neue Galerie and it has been on permanent view at the museum since adhering to the wishes of the family.

1907 Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I

Hello I'm Renee Price director of the Neue Galerie New York welcome to Bank of America's Masterpiece moment today I would like to talk to you about one of my favorite works from our collection the haunting portrait of Adele Block-Bauer One (I) by Gustav Klimt we've had it on display here at the Neue Galerie for more than 15 years and it is most certainly a masterpiece the Neue Galerie New York is a jewel box museum dedicated to early 20th century Austrian and German art housed in a restored Bozar mansion it was conceived by two close friends art dealer and museum exhibition organizer Serge Sabarsky and businessman philanthropist and art collector Ronald S. Lauder they shared a passion for the finest art of this period Gustav Klimt was born in Vienna in 1862 the eldest son of a Goldsmith he began his formal art training at age 14 at Vienna's Academy of Applied Arts by his late 20s he was creating large-scale public murals but he rebelled against the conservative art establishment and in 1897 Klimt led other free-thinking Viennese artists designers and architects to form the Vienna secession finding inspiration in international avant-garde movements members of the secession integrated painting decorative arts and Architectural elements in their displays they called this concept "[foreign language] " or a total work of art soon Vienna became a rival to Paris as a center for modernism.

Klimt was famously eccentric renowned for his obsessive work habits and passion for women celebrated for his landscapes and portraits he was held in high esteem by Vienna's affluent social elite and for nearly two decades women clamored to sit for him in 1903 Ferdinand Block asked him to paint his young wife Adele that same year Klimt visited Ravenna Italy and was astonished by its 6th Century Byzantine mosaics inspired he embellished a dayless portrait with layers of paint gesso and gold and silver leaf that literally stand out from the canvas thus began claimed so-called golden period which includes the iconic 1908 painting The Kiss these fearless entirely original canvases freely combine realism and abstraction the portrait of Adele Block one is their pinnacle and the only portrait among them.

Adele Bauer was born in 1881 the youngest of seven siblings her fabulously wealthy father Marx Bauer was a banker and a railroad magnet in 1899 she married businessman and sugar manufacturer Ferdinand Block he was 35 and she was only 18. Love had nothing to do with it Adele's sister Teddy had married Ferdinand's brother Gustav the previous year these marriages solidified the links between two prominent Jewish families.

Adele and Ferdinand shared a love for the Arts and were among Klimt's most important patrons Clint never satisfied with his work spent four years on his first portrait of Adele Block-Bauer she sat for him again and again and more than a hundred sketches that survived the picture was finally unveiled in Mannheim Germany in 1907. Adele is clearly recognizable with her hooded eyes and mysterious smile her face is idealized and melancholy her lips slightly parted as if she wants to tell us something what I find so compelling is her humanity her mystery we want to know more about her stylized geometric shapes set her apart from the background as if she were a saint or a goddess the canvas is full of fascinating details from her dazzling jewelry to the loose modern dress that falls from her shoulders and swirls theatrically around her eyes within pyramids recall ancient Egyptian magical amulets we can also make out her initials a and b scattered throughout the painting The Frame was designed especially for this painting by Klimt's friend architect Joseph Hoffman in March of 1938 Hitler annexed Austria both Klimt and Adele had died over a decade earlier but Ferdinand a prosperous Jew was an obvious Nazi Target soon after the invasion the Reich trumped up charges against him for tax evasion his property was impounded his Sugar Factory ceased and his art collection stolen by Nazi officials in 1941 the golden portrait of Adele Block-Bauer was taken to Vienna's Belvedere Museum where it was renamed portrait of a lady against a gold background the title intentionally hide a true identity and her Jewish heritage died in Switzerland in November 1945. Shortly before his death he rewrote his will leaving his estate to his two nieces and his nephew for more than 50 years his heirs fought unsuccessfully to regain his five Klimt paintings finally in 1998 Austria passed The Art Restitution Law and not saluted art began to be returned to its rightful owners Ferdinand's niece Maria Altman an American citizen initiated new lawsuits on behalf of his three heirs but a Block-Bauer's iconic portrait remained at the Belvedere against all odds the heirs finally prevailed in 2006 Vienna reluctantly said goodbye to the woman in gold.

Our Museum's President Ronald S. Lauder long a champion of art restitution led the purchase of the golden portrait for the Neue Galerie here the Woman in Gold regained her identity and found the perfect home Adele Block-Bauer is our Mona Lisa with a permanent place of honor in our collection the picture is a testament to Hitler's failure to destroy Austria's cultural heritage and it is a masterpiece for his astonishing beauty it's incredible history and its magnetic allure. I want to thank you for taking time to watch today and learn more about Gustav Klimt’s portrait of Adele Block-Bauer. I encourage you to discuss the painting with your friends and family. Thank you.
