Behind the Uniform: Understanding Trauma, Building Resilience, Changing Culture, Rob Goodland
Every first responder and healthcare professional has a story. Some of the trauma we carry comes from the calls we answer; some of it was with us long before we ever put on the uniform or stepped into a hospital. In this presentation, retired firefighter and founder of The Heart of a Horse, Robert Goodland, explores how our personal histories and the cumulative trauma of our professions shape the way we show up—for our patients, our coworkers, our families, and ourselves. Drawing from decades of service and lived experience, Robert challenges the long-held culture of “toughing it out” and invites participants to view themselves and one another through a trauma-informed lens. By recognizing the impact of both past and present trauma, we can build healthier teams, foster resilience, strengthen connection, and create workplaces where healing is valued as much as helping others heal.
