A documentary by Kamal Al Jafari | 2024 | Palestine/ Brazil/ Germany/ Qatar | 78min | In Arabic, English and Hebrew with English subtitlesCommemorating 78 years of the Nakba, we invite you to join us next Sunday at NVICinema for the screening of "A Fidai Film", a documentary by Palestinian artist and filmmaker Kamal Aljafari.
In the summer of 1982, the Israeli army invaded Beirut. During this time, it raided the Palestinian Research Center and looted its entire archive. The archive contained historical documents of Palestine, including a collection of still and moving images. Taking this as a premise, "A Fidai Film" aims to create a counter-narrative to this loss, presenting a form of cinematic sabotage that seeks to reclaim and restore the looted visual memories of Palestinian history. An exploration of identity, memory, and resistance, told through a blend of documentary and experimental filmmaking technique.
Director’s bio: Kamal Aljafari (Palestine) is a filmmaker and artist born in Ramla in 1972. His work is largely affiliated with the world of documentary, although he employs a variety of different formats that position the visual arts in dialogue with the essay film and experimental cinema. Aljafari received an MFA from Academy of Media Arts Cologne (2003). His films have been screened at festivals and museums worldwide, including Fondazione Prada, Sharjah Film Platform, Locarno Film Festival, Anthology Film Archive, Rotterdam International Film Festival, Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival, and the 35th Biennale de São Paulo. He is the recipient of major awards from FIDMarseille, Visions du Réel, among others. Aljafari has taught at The New School and the German Film and Television Academy Berlin. He has received a fellowship from the Film Study Center-Radcliffe Institute at Harvard University. He lives and works in Berlin, Germany.
/// Please note that our library has limited seats and we work on a first-come, first-served basis. Doors open at 6:30PM and the screening starts at 7:00 PM or earlier in case the space reaches its full capacity. Thank you for understanding and see you on Sunday!///
