To open the evening, Andy, Technical Team Lead at Evoluted, takes us on a journey through the unexpected chaos that appears when websites are zoomed in or viewed with screen magnification. Drawing on his lived experience, he’ll reveal how fixed navigation, cursor interactions and layouts can break at scale, and share practical insights for creating more accessible digital experiences.

To close the evening, Graham Booth from Sheffield City Council explores the importance of web accessibility in the public sector and the lessons other sectors can learn from it. Expect practical advice on accessibility standards, testing approaches, getting teams on board, and quick wins that can help make digital products more inclusive for all users.

Honey, I Blew Up the Web
Host: Andy Carter

Info: Just like the supersized toddler wreaking havoc on Las Vegas in ‘Honey, I Blew Up the Kid’, zooming in on websites exposes chaos—but it's UX components untested at scale that break, not users. From a lived-experience using screen magnification and zoom settings, I'll show how fixed navs, cursor interactions and layouts fall apart at scale, and how to build experiences that work for everyone.

Andy is a Technical Team Lead at Evoluted in Sheffield and a passionate advocate for digital accessibility. He has spoken at numerous events across the north of England. Outside of work, Andy runs Street Art Sheffield, documenting the Steel City’s murals and running the occasional street art tour.

Info: Web accessibility in the public sector is extremely important, with legal requirements we must meet to ensure that all users can use our products without barriers.
