About this Event
Join The Cleanup Club and Michigan Environmental Council for a nurdle hunt + trash cleanup as we work together to protect our Great Lakes from microplastic pollution! ๐
So, what are nurdles and why are we doing this? Nurdles, or plastic pellets, are small lentil-sized plastic beads that fall under the category of microplastics. Theyโre the building blocks of most plastic products, shipped around the world to be melted down and molded into items like water bottles, plastic bags, and the majority of everyday plastic products. Unfortunately, trillions of these pellets end up polluting our environment every year due to mishandling during production and transportation.
To raise awareness about the impact of nurdles on our Great Lakes and connected waterways, we are participating in the inaugural International Plastic Pellet Count. This global event encourages volunteers to visit local waterways, search for plastic pellet pollution, and record their findings, with the goal to better understand the scale of plastic pellet pollution worldwide.
Volunteers will help collect and count nurdles (AKA plastic pellets) to represent the Great Lakes region in this global effort to combat pollution at the source and support policy initiatives like the Plastic Pellet-Free Waters Act.
The Cleanup Club and Michigan Environmental Council are proud founding members of the Michigan Microplastics Coalition.
