About this Event
Nueva Math Circle is a popular community event that celebrates math at its most engaging, enriching, and fun. Our events draw students from across the Bay Area at all grade levels (PreK to Grade 12) who come to enjoy intriguing mathematical activities, games, and demonstrations led by distinguished mathematicians and leading educators.
Join us Feb. 11 for the biggest Nueva Math Circle ever!We couldn't be more excited for the biggest Nueva Math Circle we've ever hosted. We are thrilled to have on-hand special guest Dr. Po-Shen Loh, math professor at Carnegie Mellon and the national coach of the USA International Math Olympiad team. Featured presenters also include Dr. Ming Li (Sirona / Immucor) on bioinformatics, Steven Chanan (Nueva School), Dr. Peter Koroteev (UC Berkeley), games & puzzles hosted by San Francisco Math Circle, and more!
If you think you'll be attending, we strongly recommend you purchase your tickets right away. Sessions fill up quickly and have sold out within 24 hours in the past.
We hope you'll join us, and please help spread the word by forwarding this page to anyone you know who may be interested in an enriching and fun-filled afternoon of math!
KEYNOTE with Dr. Po-Shen Loh for Gr. 5-12 students & parents
Dr. Po-Shen Loh is a math professor at Carnegie Mellon University and the national coach of the USA International Math Olympiad team. His research and educational outreach take him to cities across the world. He reaches over 10,000 people each year through events, and his videos have totaled over 15 million YouTube views. He holds math degrees from Caltech, Cambridge and Princeton.
His keynote on "Math, Invention & Life" is not to be missed: Seeking inspiration to love math? Looking for resources or strategies to build powerful technical thinking skills? Want to learn how to create and invent both inside and outside of math? Interested in living an impactful life?
Prof. Loh will weave together a variety of topics, starting from some math questions which demonstrate the power of mathematical creativity. However, the interactive talk will rapidly expand to stories from his own experiences applying mathematical thinking to innovate and implement new solutions to real world problems. The talk will also share practical strategies to develop skills in math and invention, and the topics during every talk are unique.
The keynote is for students Gr. 5-12. Parents are strongly encouraged to attend as Prof. Loh's message is intended for them as well.
SPECIAL WORKSHOP with Dr. Po-Shen Loh for Gr. 6-8 studentsAfter the keynote, Prof. Loh will host a special 1-hour Math Circle workshop with Gr. 6-8 students during the second half of the event.
Prof. Loh does not hold workshops of this nature often, and this workshop is exclusive to Nueva Math Circle. Don't miss this chance to dive deeper and learn directly from him!
This special 1-hour workshop with Prof. Loh is for Gr. 6-8 students and will follow the keynote. Capacity is limited due to space constraints, so please reserve your tickets now!
For Gr. 9-12 students: Bioinformatics with Dr. Ming Li, Sirona / Immucor
Explore the cutting-edge intersection of math, biology and health with Dr. Ming Li, VP of Bioinformatics at Sirona (acquired by Immucor). Immucor is a global leader in screening and diagnosis for transfusion and transplants.
Math for Bioinformatics: Unlocking DNA to Improve Patient Health
In this talk, Dr. Li will first give an overview of key concepts in bioinformatics while highlighting interesting examples of clinical applications where tools like DNA sequencing and data analysis were instrumental to success and improving patients' lives. He will also share his journey getting started in the field and advice for anyone interested in pursuing such an interdisciplinary career.
This talk is for Gr. 9-12 students. Parents of Gr. 3-12 students are also encouraged to attend while their students are in their sessions / activities!
Gr. 3-5 sessions: Steven Chanan, Nueva Math Teacher and Math Club / Competition CoordinatorSteven Chanan teaches math and music at Nueva School and also serves as the Math Club / Competition Coordinator. We're thrilled to have him hosting our Math Circle sessions for Grade 3-5 students.
Each session is limited to 35 students.
PreK - Gr. 2 sessions: Dr. Peter Koroteev, UC BerkeleyDr. Koroteev enjoys teaching math to younger students at Berkeley Math Circle and Stanford Math Circle. He is a math lecturer at UC Berkeley, working on representation theory, algebraic theory and mathematical physics. He has a PhD from University of Minnesota.
Partitions: in how many ways can we split a whole number into the sums of smaller whole numbers? These are called integer partitions. In this session, we'll explore the world of partitions and interesting connections between then.
Each session is limited to 35 students.
Games & Puzzles hosted by San Francisco Math CircleWe're delighted to have our friends from San Francisco Math Circle returning to host Games & Puzzles in the Cafe. At past events, our students from PreK - Grade 4 have been engrossed by the array of hands-on activities, many of which were invented in-house!
Please have lunch before the event!
Due to the scale of this Math Circle, we are unable to offer meals or pizza this time. Please have lunch before arriving on-campus.
Snacks will be available for purchase at the event as usual. Nueva Math Circle has gone cashless, and we accept credit / debit / Apple Pay / Google Pay.
